A century ago, TLPA co-founder John Hertz invented the
yellow taxicab. As an entrepreneur in Chicago in the early 1900s, he asked a
local university to scientifically identify which color was the easiest to
The winner? You guessed it: Yellow.
From there, the iconic yellow cab, instantly recognizable
and boundlessly duplicated, was born.
But what about now? How has the iconic yellow cab aged?
TLPA conducted an unscientific poll this month, asking our
Twitter followers what color taxis should be in the next century. We received
nearly a thousand responses, and here’s what our followers had to say:
Yellow was still the top choice, taking 33 percent of the
vote, but black was the second choice with 28 percent. Green followed with 21
percent, and “Other” took 18 percent of the vote.
As TLPA celebrates its 100
th anniversary this
year, we’re always thinking about how to move our industry forward. What do you
think – should yellow be the industry choice for the next century?
